Shared Website Hosting
A shared web hosting
service or virtual hosting service or derive host
refers to a web hosting service where many websites
reside on one web server connected to the Internet.
Each site "sits" on its own partition, or section/place
on the server to keep it separate from other sites.
This is generally the most economical option for
hosting, as many people share the overall cost
of server maintenance.
With shared web hosting,
the service provider is generally responsible
for managing web servers, installing web server
software, security updates and technical support.
Most web servers found are based on the Linux
operating system and LAMP software bundle because
of the low operating cost associated with open
source softawre.
But some web hosting providers offer Microsoft
Windows-based or FreeBSD-based web hosting solutions.
For example: the Plesk and Ensim web control panels
are both available for two operating systems,
Windows and Linux. Versions for either operating
system have very similar interfaces and functionality.
Shared website hosting
has it's disadvantages as well such as sharing
the same Internet protocol (IP) number and do
not properly support their own "HTTPS"
security however they may share a digital certificate
by the web hosting provider.
